Counselling Services
The word “counselling” is used to refer to a variety of treatments by therapists. It is generally accepted that guidance or advice regarding a particular event or course of actions is being provided. It takes place during several pre-scheduled sessions, or meetings. They may be thirty minutes to several hours in length. This will depend on the topic and the individual. The goal, during these sessions, is the resolution of a client’s personal or professional difficulties. There different types of therapists who use sessions to help their clients. Certified psychotherapists analyze their client’s psychological makeup.
Certified counsellors outline problems, find solutions, provide educational data and assist in the decision making process. Both types of professionals are referred to as therapists. When it comes to counselling types, there is directed and nondirective. In directive sessions, the counsellor listens to the client’s issues and concerns and helps decide which course of action will best suit the situation to achieve specific goals. Once the decision is made, the encouragement and motivation are provided until the goals are met. This type of session may be very emotional as the client is often at a crossroads and has pent up frustration, anger and fear.
The counsellor’s job is to help clarify the components of the situation. Nondirective counselling focuses on listening to the client. It helps explain what circumstances and the how the client’s actions affected the results and helps determine an appropriate course of action. The action is based on the person, rather than the issue. The counsellor listens as much to what the client doesn’t say, as what they do. They look for components of the situation that the client inferred, based on suppositions, as opposed to fact. This is noted and discussed. Counsellors often specialize in various areas, such as marriage and family, substance abuse or rehabilitation.
