Face to face counselling services
There are many variables involved in the success or failure of counselling. The face to face style involves a client and a therapist together in a room. Each brings with them a set of characteristics that will weigh heavily in what is gained or lost during sessions. Therapist variables have to do with the training and attributes of the counsellor. Different counsellors use different methods. What is effective and comfortable for one client may not necessarily be for another. There also is the issue of personality conflict. If a therapist and a client just don’t mesh for whatever reason, the sessions are not going to be productive. Training also has an impact. The amount and kind of training they have had will translate into how they deal with the needs of the client.
Another variable present in counselling has to do with the client. Characteristics including the way they form attachments and their level of motivation will have an important impact on the therapy. People with an avoidant style often view therapy as having too many risks to balance with the benefit and are less likely to achieve success. Expectation is another important characteristic. If someone enters therapy with expectations beyond what are achievable in a given period of time, they are sure to be disappointed. This disappointment could lead to an abandonment of the process altogether.
In counselling sessions, particularly the face to face type, the relationship between counsellor and client is a crucial one. This is often called the therapeutic relationship. Some theorists explain that the counsellor is a secure base that a client starts from to explore the issues at hand. When they are secure with the base, they can return to it for encouragement or for a respite from dealing with difficulties. If this security exists, sessions tend to be deep and rich and very productive. If this attachment is not formed then the sessions are far less in depth and the outcome of therapy is not as good.
Another counselling variable is a cultural one. Much goes into the makeup of culture. It goes beyond the country of birth or residence. Culture has to do with race, gender, age, socio economic level, sexual orientation, religion and many other factors. A therapist must be mindful of their own stereotypes and prejudices as should the client. Understanding the cultural base of each of the players is an important step in successful therapy.
