‘Skype’ counselling services.
Skype is a software application used to make voice or video calls over the Internet via a computer. Calls to other Skype users are generally free, regardless of where the call originates or terminates. This is a particularly cost effective method of communication for people who make a lot of international or long-distance domestic calls. Calls to or from a Skype user, from landlines or mobile devices have fees associated with them. Conferencing and group chat are both features of the applications. This makes it an appropriate communications medium for conference calls and Skype counselling sessions.
To use Skype,
an identification number must be assigned. This will be tied to a unique user name selected by the user. Connection is made in the same manner as a traditional telephone call. It can use both analogue and digital lines. When using Skype for counselling sessions, a time that is convenient to all parties involved can be chosen. This can included any surroundings that they are comfortable and at ease in. Skype counselling sessions are confidential, as if all parties were in the same room. Connections are secure, so that there is no need to be concerned about someone listening in.
At first, the idea is a bit disconcerting, but clients who participate in these sessions are comfortable and therapy is effective. Not too long ago, the idea of conducting a session long distance would have been considered impersonal. Today, with everyone rushing about, trying to get everything done and still spend time with friends and family, Skype counselling may the only way to fit it all in. In combination with a web cam, the video conferencing utilizes high quality video. Headsets can be used if there are others in the near vicinity, to keep the contents of the session confidential.
The Skype software is free for download and easy to use. Skype counselling is an alternative to in-person session. They provide more interactivity than either email or telephone sessions and conform to all nationally mandated requirements for confidentiality. These sessions are billed in the same manner that an in-person session would be. The counsellor is generally in their office, but the patient can be anywhere that is convenient for them. There are certain types of personality disorders that make this an inappropriate counselling method. However, for most people this is a viable alternative.
