Telephone Counselling
Telephone counselling is a method of conducting a therapy session over the phone. The licensed counsellor or psychotherapist leads a session between themselves and an individual or group of clients. Many clients find the treatments as effective as in person sessions. The convenience of this type of therapy allows many people to get the guidance they need without leaving the comfort of home, or necessitating leaving work early. Clients are frequently disconcerted by the full attention of a counsellor during in person counselling. When conducted via telephone, they feel less constrained and speak more freely. This method does not work well for everyone.
Clients may fi
nd that telephone counselling leaves them feeling isolated and disconnected. Interruptions occur more frequently with sessions via telephone. Family, co-workers, other phone calls are all common occurrences. This may also result in conversations that are not as confidential as they could be. At an on-site session the environment is controlled. This ensures that all parties involved can focus on the issues at hand. For many clients, they begin by seeing a counsellor in a physical location. Once a relationship has been established, the telephone sessions begin. This seems to be a good mix of modern and traditional technique for some.
Telephone counselling was originally used as an early intervention method. Clients discussed their work-related and personal issues that were impacting the way they functioned on a day-to-day basis, and affecting productivity. Depending on the outcome of the call, an in-person session was then scheduled. Since then, techniques for conducting tele-counselling have been modified and standardized. Telephone crisis lines are frequently run by non-profit organizations. Clients call a hotline and talk with a counsellor. These are unscheduled sessions. Issues addressed include alcohol recovery concerns, depression, unplanned pregnancy and social skills. There are many types of counselling via telephone that are proven effective.
The most common topics consist of marriage, self-improvement, and addiction. They are also the issues most frequently addressed by corporate employee assistance programs. Each session lasts for 50 minutes, depending on the severity of the issue. Before disconnecting the call, the time and date of the next telephone counselling session is scheduled. Addiction counselling has received the most positive feedback. Recovering clients can call a counsellor when their resolve is faltering. Counsellors provide valuable support and motivation to continue.
