This is a guest blog written by Melanie Bowen.

Meridian healing can be quite effective when treating a cancer patient. The most urgent part of the treatment is to catch it before it metastasizes to other parts of the body. If EFT or intuitive healing practitioners can help mental affects that come from the rare aggressive diseases like mesothelioma that is triggered from asbestos exposure, it can help a variety of illnesses in terms of helping the body by healing the mind. For example, in the beginning stages, releasing the energy will go far toward healing the patient’s mind of the harmful effects of both the illness and the treatments. It may take intensive and frequent work, but a beneficial outcome may turn one into a hopeful. Patient. As we all know, a positive attitude goes a long way.

Perhaps beneficial to the patient following a mesothelioma prognosis would be explaining that this treatment isn’t only about the electrical currents in the body. The mind-body-spirit aura must be aligned and flowing before treatment will work, and that goes for the practitioner as well as the patient. The patient will be blocked not only by the knowledge of the presence of the cancer, but by the attendant emotions, the pain, the fear of the treatments ahead and what lies beyond. The fear alone will be a major block, so the life energy in the patient needs to be directed to a release of the energy.

Once released, the intuitive healing practitioner may choose to concentrate on the physical, allowing the spiritual energies to follow in tandem. The patient might not understand how the release of the energies that have accumulated to this point will be facilitated unless s/he sees the release of the physical side of the equation. This is where the meridians come in. Explaining the pressure points to the patient and how they affect the area in question might allow some insight to the patient, easing his/her way into understanding the energy part of the equation.

If the healer has a patient not well versed with alternative medicine or methods of healing, s/he might not be aware they are blocking the healer from working with him/her. In a case like this, distance healing or absent healing might be the path to take, for the simple reason that when the healer shows the patient what has already resulted from his/her work, the patient will be more amenable to trying a different way of healing. Then work with meridians and energies may begin in earnest.

Explaining yin and yang to the patient might go far towards the patient’s understanding of releasing the energy. What goes in has to come out somehow, which retains balance. There is no room in a balanced mind-body-spirit connection for negativity, so understanding yin and yang is important for the patient to work on. That holds true for the meridians as well as the electrical currents and spiritual pathways for a well-balanced whole. The practitioner will note that his/her own balance will benefit the patient.

The music world is in mourning today due to the death of Amy Winehouse the troubled female singer. Although Amy struggled with her addiction for a long time there has been no reason given for her death.

There has been a long line of musicians and singers who have died from addiction related circumstances including the innovated and flamboyant master of the guitar Jimi Hendrix. Bless them all.

Addiction is a killer and it does its job exceptionally well by using devious and underhand methods. It manipulates and lies to the addict and it pushes and coerces the addict into protecting it. Addiction has amazing and effective powers and its main task is to kill. There is no cure for addiction; however, it can be overcome.

Overcoming Addiction

There are many difficulties involved in overcoming addiction. First of all the person suffering from addiction really needs to want to overcome their addiction. If someone is half hearted in overcoming their addiction then the addiction will come out on top every time and the sufferer will continue to suffer more and more until the addiction does its job.

In overcoming addiction, contemplating about doing something about it has no power whatsoever over it and the addiction will continue to run riot and cause more and more chaos for the addict and all others around them. The addict needs to make a firm commitment and be determined to take on the job of overcoming addiction.

Taking Action in Overcoming Addiction

Talking about doing something about overcoming addiction has no meaning for the actual addiction. Most addicts live in a world of fantasy and distorted thinking and their behaviours can reflect this. They are controlled by their addiction and sometimes the first stage of overcoming addiction is to ask for help in order to begin the release of the addiction’s powerful grip. Taking action is an important step in overcoming addiction. By doing so the addiction will have some resistance to it and the addict will realise that they have some control back. It is important to gain some control, this introduces hope. Hope is what is lost when the addiction takes over and finding hope in overcoming addiction can be the trigger for a full recovery from addiction.

Treatment in Overcoming Addiction

There are many treatments for addiction and there are many variations of treatment. It is important for the addict to find what suits them. I read somewhere recently that if there was a perfect treatment for addiction we would all be using it. I say in order to recover from addiction use the resources that are available. Overcoming addiction doesn’t have to be really difficult there are many treatments in overcoming addiction including the 12 step fellowships, addiction counselling, clinical hypnotherapy and group therapy to name just a few.

Maybe just take a few moments today sometime to gather your thoughts for the addicts who have lost their lives to addiction and for the addicts who are still suffering with this cold, punishing and murderous condition.

I’ve been having some good feedback and interesting questions about my last blog entitled the ‘Addictive Personality’. There has also been some interest around instant and delayed gratification so I thought I’d write about that today.

Immediate or instant gratification is all about now, I want it now, straight away, not later or tomorrow or next week but now, immediately, stunted emotional growth in adults may play a part in this. Delayed or deferred gratification is being able to have more patience and wait in order to obtain something.

The example I gave in my addictive personality blog was about my wife and I having different ways of saving. My wife saves with deferred gratification and I save with some deferred gratification then spend my savings in one go, immediate gratification. Immediate gratification is rife in addictions and can’t always be seen by the person who is subconsciously seeking immediate gratification.

Heroin users are prime examples of immediate gratification. Progressing from smoking heroin to injecting heroin is common in heroin addicts and they seek the immediate effects of heroin by injecting, this of course is very dangerous, however, the immediate gratification overrides any of the risks involved. The same can be said for cannabis users smoking a pipe or a bong rather than a joint. Alcohol drinkers are the same by throwing alcohol down their throat like it was soon to be removed from the planet.

In sex addiction immediate and delayed gratification are very common, especially when there is flirting involved. The flirting can sometimes be seen as part of the chase and this can be the delayed gratification, obviously, the immediate gratification is when the chase is over and sex ensues.

The Pleasure principal is a psychoanalytic term which was coined by Sigmund Freud. Addiction obviously relates to the pleasure principal especially in sex addiction. The pleasure principal, instant gratification and the brain’s reward system are all interlinked and to overcome any addiction there needs to be a balance of all three.

Immediate gratification has a serious part to play in relapse. This can sometimes be the reason why addicts in recovery substitute their addictions, also, this is why the gateways to an addicts drug of choice need to be explored in order to prevent a lapse or relapse. For example a cannabis smoker’s gateway may be alcohol and vice versa.

I hope this blog has helped you gain some more understanding into the addictive personality and delayed and immediate gratification.

Do people or even animals for that matter have such a thing as an addictive personality? Or is there no such thing as an addictive personality and it’s really personalities that addicts become meaning: Is the addict addicted because of their addictive personality or are they already addicts and they develop the personality around that?

This question can stir up all sorts of answers from all sorts of people. So let’s begin by asking another question.

What is an addictive personality?

How I see it is that an addictive personality is a condition that makes people susceptible to having an addiction. An addictive personality type will substitute addictions and may end up with a ‘cross’ addiction. They may even have more than one addiction. Someone with an addictive personality is unable to give up one thing without starting another. This can be common in people who finish a relationship and find another very quickly like finding someone on the rebound, this is sometimes called co-dependency.

For example: Some people with an alcohol problem may also have a gambling problem. Sometimes when a person overcomes their main addiction i.e. smoking cigarettes, they find themselves binging on food and someone with a sex addiction may also be addicted to masturbating and watching pornography as well.

Of course instant gratification also has its part to play in addictive personality because someone with addictive traits seeks instant rather than delayed gratification with this being a major factor in any addiction. A good example of this is my wife can save money easily without spending it, she has delayed gratification whereas I can manage to save up some money then I spend it all at once, I definitely have instant gratification.

What you’ll find as well is that people with an addictive personality tend to lack in self control and if they find something new that they like then they become obsessed with it very quickly. Their new found interest can easily be their main focus for weeks on end while they attempt to ‘fix’ themselves until they find something new to obsess on. Of course this can also apply to relationships as some people just seem to flit from one relationship to another, this can also be caused by feelings of insecurity and the need to fixate.

Personally, I feel that that there may be aspects of addictive personality traits in us all. I hope that you’ve found this blog on addictive personality helpful and that you haven’t identified with it too much.

Please check out my overcoming addiction mp3 hypnosis downloads under ADDICTION on the main menu above.

In the media lately, including facebook there’s been a lot of attention been given to the controversial drug ‘Chantix’. Chantix is a drug that is used in the treatment of stopping smoking; however, using Chantix is not an easy way to stop smoking.

I don’t have any personal experience of Chantix but I do have a lot of experience with my clients who have used this drug to try and help them to stop smoking, by the way I have never suggested or encouraged my clients to use Chantix, quite the opposite.

There’s been a lot of talk about the side effects of Chantix and the feedback I’ve been receiving from my clients who have used this drug are: lack of concentration, anger and frustration, mood swings and lethargy. Surely this is not an easy way to stop smoking . Why would someone put themselves through this? There’s only going to be one outcome if someone is suffering from these side effects and that is they are going to start smoking again.

There are many ways to stop smoking, some easier than others. You can cold turkey, not recommended. You can read stop smoking books or look at stop smoking DVDs. You can use the NHS programme to stop smoking. However, there is an easy way to stop smoking.

I have worked with many, many clients who have found hypnotherapy an easy way to stop smoking. Hypnotherapy really is an easy way to stop smoking and that’s because hypnotherapy can help to deal with the self defeating thoughts and behaviours that someone may experience when they attempt to stop smoking. Hypnotherapy can also help with the cravings and urges for nicotine as well as withdrawal symptoms. When someone who is stopping smoking can deal with all of the above fairly easily, then compared to using Chantix, hypnotherapy is an easy way to stop smoking.

Although hypnotherapy can sometimes be expensive but well worth the expense another easy way to stop smoking is to use an mp3 stop smoking hypnosis downloads. Mp3 stop smoking hypnosis downloads can sometimes be as effective as having treatment from a qualified hypnotherapist. How I work with someone who wants to stop smoking is to have four clinical hypnotherapy sessions with a client as well as give them a stop smoking hypnosis CD which they can then download it onto an mp3 player which then gives them stop smoking hypnosis downloads that they can use whenever they want to.
So, using hypnotherapy plus mp3 hypnosis downloads is a very effective and an easy way to stop smoking.

So we’re well into the first week of Wimbledon and it’s just the same as other sports where participants can win or beat themselves because of their positive or negative attitude.

I’ve been watching Andy Murray in particular lose his temper when he makes a mistake and he punishes himself by attacking his trainers with his racket or he’ll smash his racket off the ground, sometimes he’ll punch his racket (he seems to like that one). During one game he nearly twisted his left eyebrow off, a clear sign of self harming.

Two weeks prior to Wimbledon Andy Murray won Queens Tournament and one of the commentators spoke about Andy being seen as a different person in regards to being calmer in himself. John McEnroe commented that Andy couldn’t make changes in only two weeks, c’mon John I’ve witnessed people make major changes in two hours in my therapy room, actually, I’ve seen people make major changes in two minutes.

The point I’m making is when someone displays self defeating or sabotaging behaviours they will in actual fact eventually do just that, they will defeat themselves.

They are physically reinforcing negative messages to their subconscious.

There are many signs of self defeating behaviours. Two of the biggest self destructive behaviours, not only in sport but in everyday life, are anger and frustration or should I say not dealing constructively with anger and frustration.

So let’s look at anger and frustration. Just like many other sportsmen and women Andy Murray becomes angry at himself, he then becomes frustrated and he lashes out at his trainers with his racket or he even tries to break his racket by smashing it against the ground or he punches his racket etc, etc. Anger and frustration are natural emotions, however, punching etc are all behaviours, more to the point, they are unhealthy, negative and destructive behaviours, and they are also childlike behaviours. My four year old grandson can sometimes behave like that, maybe I should buy him a tennis racket, no tennis ball, just a racket, maybe he’d become a Wimbledon champion one day, (this is doubtful as my daughter and son-in-law say he’s going to play for ‘The Blue Brazil’).

When Andy Murray channels his anger and frustration outwards and he lets rip to the crowd he releases power fuelled with adrenaline and this motivates and lifts him. This release of energy propels him to play like a champion. He suddenly looks interested and his head is held high and he stops dragging his feet, suddenly there’s a spring in his step and he plays inventive and exciting tennis.

Andy Murray is not the only sportsperson to suffer with this, Wayne Rooney, Gary Anderson, Ronnie O’Sullivan and even Tiger Woods can all be self defeatist but when they channel that anger and frustration positively they become winners.

Believe the hype or think for yourself

For too long hypnosis has had a bad or ‘difficult’ press. If a person doesn’t understand something they have 3 options open to them.

1) They might be sceptical and therefore save the trouble of looking further and possibly benefiting.
2) They may conclude it is dangerous and to be avoided at all costs.
3) They may spend time discovering the truth behind the hype.

If you don’t know much about a topic it’s easy to be suspicious. Some people assume hypnosis is akin to a carnival side show, others consider it mystic mumbo jumbo or ‘mind control.’ For those who look beyond the hype the truth is far more illuminating.

The most powerful tool you possess

There are potentially huge benefits for those who use hypnosis as part of everyday life. When you understand hypnosis you start to see its potential to improve human performance in the physical, emotional and intellectual realms. For me, rumour, gossip and suspicion weren’t good enough.

I determined to learn all I could about hypnosis – I learned every fact and practised every technique under the sun. I took several training courses – some good, some terrible. I invested thousands of hours of devoted study to hypnosis and discovered just what is possible. I hypnotised friends, neighbours and work colleagues. Hypnosis greatly changed things for me on a personal level

How hypnosis helped me

I used to be shy. Thanks to hypnosis I can now talk to thousands at a time and can approach anybody calmly and confidently.

I used to have poor concentration and procrastinate; thanks to hypnosis I can instantly motivate myself.

I used to find physical work outs and exercise exhausting but because of hypnosis I am now in the best shape of my life.

Incidentally I also stopped myself blushing with hypnosis. Now if ever I have a difficult call or conversation coming up, something I may naturally feel reluctant to do (you know the kind of thing) I spontaneously self hypnotise and rehearse the upcoming situation feeling good, with myself remaining calm. In this way I habitually set my own emotional ‘blue prints’ for up coming situations. Having said that it’s naturally that some people have concerns or half digested ‘hand me down’ ideas regarding hypnosis. A common one is the one about ‘mind control.’ However what does this really mean?

Why you are more in control of yourself in hypnosis

If someone expresses concerns about being ‘controlled’ in hypnosis what they mean is they don’t want to be like a robot, an automaton that is forced to obey the every whim of the hypnotist. We can’t help but influence others but we don’t control them. To understand why you need to understand hypnosis better.

So what is hypnosis like?

Hypnosis isn’t like a coma. It’s not unconsciousness – more a subtle shifting of consciousness. In hypnosis, you can still think logically but you also have access to the ‘software’ of your mind so that you can update instinctive emotional and physical responses. In fact the hypnotised subject (not the hypnotist) calls the shots. When I hypnotise someone I need to go at their speed and respond to their needs and expectations. Hypnosis will give you more control in your own life because of what it enables you to do.

How can I be so sure?

Because over the decades I’ve seen all kinds of people, all ages and from all backgrounds turn their lives around thanks to hypnosis. When you use hypnosis for yourself it improves confidence in all kinds of ways. When you use it to change other’s lives it just blows you away. This is what I mean.

When I first hypnotised someone to feel no sensation in a painful arthritic arm it was an incredible feeling. When I first cured life long phobias quickly and comfortably I was astounded. When I stopped hardened alcoholics from drinking and even got a heroin addict off the stuff and back into mainstream life again I started to feel angry that people could just associate hypnosis with entertainment.

With the aid of hypnosis I (and many people I have trained and worked with) have helped severely depressed people feel strong and positive again. The rewards and satisfactions are hard to describe. I’m going to take a stand against ignorance and short sightedness around hypnosis and here’s why.

Why you need to reclaim hypnosis for yourself

Hypnosis is your birthright. It’s nature’s optimum learning tool. In fact to learn and perform anything well you need to experience a natural focussing of attention, a natural kind of hypnosis. To be successful hypnosis needs to be your companion and friend.

Successful people use it naturally all the time because hypnosis is natural. It’s the way we learn new responses. Unlike medications its side effects are purely positive – one expectant mother I worked with to feel relaxed during child birth later reported that she was also more relaxed when flying!

Hypnosis is easy to learn and every body can benefit. Hypnosis is a safe environment to ‘try out’ new behaviours and emotional patterns before you experience them for real. So the young man can ask a woman out for a date many times in calm relaxed hypnosis so that by the time he does it for real it feels real and natural and relaxed. Sports people who use hypnosis learn new quicker and more accurately. So hypnosis gives you more control of yourself and your life, it’s natural and gives you instant benefits and it’s a way of ‘trying on’ and establishing new patterns of emotional response and behaviour, Hypnosis enables you to develop yourself as a human being.

By Barrie St John - HypnoShop.com

I’m often asked the question “Are self hypnosis recordings really as effective as hypnotherapy with a real live person?” My answer is yes, absolutely.

Certainly, there are significant differences to be found when comparing self hypnosis CDs or downloads to one on one therapy, but they are just that, differences. What one individual considers a benefit may be seen as a drawback to the next person. It really comes down to each person’s natural makeup, which determines what works for them.

For instance, in the case of live one to one hypnotherapy, a session can be concentrated on a particular problem, which may be a priority to you at a given moment, especially if you’re easily hypnotized. With recorded self hypnosis sessions, you do not have the benefit of focalized subject matter. There is no doubt that for specific problems, particular deep rooted problems, live one to one hypnotherapy is the best option.

On the other hand, to someone else, successful hypnotherapy may be dependant on the need to hear the message repeatedly. The law of concentrated attention and the power of suggestion in hypnosis are proven and very real. In this case, a recorded self hypnosis session is really the best option. You have complete control over when and how often to hear the recording. With live hypnotherapy, you do not have the benefit of repeated play, or the convenience of selective timing.

There is nothing preventing you from trying combined therapy, wherein you see a hypnotherapist in person, and also benefit from self hypnosis recordings in your own time. There is no system to conform to; it’s really whatever works for each individual person. Each of us has to answer this for ourselves.

After several face to face hypnotherapy sessions, you may want to try a CD or a download, and see how it works for you. On the other hand, you may start with self hypnosis recordings, and after experiencing some degree of success, you may wish to have one or more face to face sessions.

From a cost standpoint, it’s certainly worth trying self hypnosis recordings first. It’s far more economical than face to face, and if successful, you can save a lot of time and money by directing your own therapy. I always give my clients one of my own self hypnosis CDs to use in between therapy sessions, so that they get the best of both worlds.

There is also the added advantage that by repeated listening of a recording you’ll have experienced the hypnotic state many times, which means you’ll no what to expect from hypnosis in general. Some people find it hard to enter a state of creative relaxation on the first few attempts. Since you’ll have experienced this many times from listening to a self hypnosis recording, it could save you both time and money should you wish to visit a hypnotherapist for live one to one sessions.

I’ve heard of a few hypnotherapists who question the effectiveness of self hypnosis recordings and I often get asked the question “do recorded hypnosis sessions actually work?” I say yes they do, without question. It’s like anything else; it may not work for everyone, but for those who are willing to listen regularly, it can be extremely successful. Hypnosis is about suggestion, the more you hear something, the more it penetrates. This is precisely why recorded self hypnosis sessions are so effective. Don’t let anyone tell you differently.

Well, can the mind heal the body? It’s certainly a fascinating subject and it certainly stirs up interesting and conflicting answers from people.

There have been a number of studies and researches that were conducted in order to get some conclusive evidence about whether the mind has any effect on the physical health of any human being. The results prove that a lot of what happens inside our bodies is linked directly to our mind. Science reveals that when a person goes through some kind of mental turmoil the effects can be directly seen on the health of the body.

So the spiritualists and hypnotherapists all are agreeing on one fact: If the negative traits of the mind can cause negative effects to the human body then the positive working of the mind will definitely have a positive effect on the body as well. This is something a lot of mind control experts and hypnotists as well as holistic teachers are now working on – to provide mankind with a simple solution to their every day problems and to provide a way to heal the body naturally without the help of toxic drugs with side effects.

From Jose Silva of ‘The Silva Method’ to Anne Harrington’s “The Cure Within”, all these books talk about the one important attribute of the human mind – the ability to control physical responses and behaviors which can provide healing to the body instead of causing it harm. All these healing techniques take the help of mind power in order to overcome the physical obstacles one has in the form of depression and disease. Since the root of all such problems is in the mind, it is also the place where the healing can come from if the human just learns to unleash that power within itself which can help them heal the body.

Hypnosis, self hypnosis and mp3 hypnosis downloads are very powerful tools to kick start that power within. I have witnessed my clients making some unbelievable physical changes with the help of hypnosis and mp3 self hypnosis downloads. Self hypnosis is a very simple thing to learn to make physical permanent changes in the body. It still fascinates and sometimes even surprises me when I witness the unbelievable physical changes in someone who has done it all by themselves without the need for medication. Isn’t it fantastic what we can do when we harness and channel our minds to heal our bodies?

Just wanted to say a Happy Self Hypnosis Easter to all my blog readers.

I’m just writing a mini blog this morning as I’m still on holiday and enjoying the scorching weekend here in Southbourne on the south coast of England and it looks like being another sunny and incredibly hot day today as well. Ok let’s get on with the mini blog, I suppose if you wanted a weather forecast you’d look it up online or see it on TV…

In my last blog I wrote about all the new stuff I am going to be doing in the coming months ahead but I forgot to add that I will be doing an ‘overcoming addiction’ series of videos which will be available for viewing on my website for free. These videos shall cover such things as ‘what is addiction’? and ‘how addiction works’ etc

Also, I have a logo and shield for my newly founded Southbourne School of Hypnosis that’s it on the left and a hypnotherapy training banner as well. If you’d like to become a clinical hypnotherapist and gain a diploma in clinical hypnotherapy at the Southbourne School of Hypnosis please click here for more information.

Ok, that’s it for now apart from this Easter joke: How many eggs does it take to change a light bulb? None, eggs don’t have hands…
