Hypnotherapy Bournemouth

Clinical hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis in therapy.  Hypnosis is an induced mental state.  It can be described as wakefulness but with lessened peripheral awareness.  It is relaxed but focused.  The induction comes from a series of suggestions that lead the subject into the desired state. The word itself comes from the Greek word for “sleep.” It is an abbreviation of a term that can be translated to mean “sleep of the nervous system.” Therapeutic uses include quit smoking, weight loss, behaviour modification, anxiety and pain management and stress related illnesses as well as personal development.  The characteristic suggestibility is used to help people change and manage behaviours.

Hypnotherapy dates back to the early years of recorded history.  An Austrian named Frank Mesmer is believed to be the first to do scientific study into the topic.  In the mid to late 1700s, he used hypnosis therapy to treat various conditions in his patients.  He was perhaps the first to explore the connection between mind and body in the treatment of disease.  The technique he used is the basis of all modern variations.  His technique was successful but he was not taken seriously in the field of medicine at the time and was often ridiculed by colleagues.  It was nearly two hundred years later before modern incarnations of his methods took their rightful place in mainstream medicine.  In 1958, the method gained the approval of the American Medical Association.

There are many different types of hypnotherapy.  The traditional type uses direct suggestion and relaxation.  This is a direct method of behaviour modification and is the basis for other forms.  Hypnoanalysis is also often known as regression.  During this form, the subject is basically taken back in time to relive past traumatic memories.  This method has been used to treat posttraumatic stress disorder.  Due to some questionable regression use and the resulting false memory syndrome, hypnoanalysis has become somewhat controversial.

Two other types of hypnotherapy include Ericksonian and cognitive/behavioural.  Ericksonian is named for Milton Erickson, one of the 20th century’s leaders in hypnosis who was an exceptional hypnotherapist.  This form uses conversation consisting of complicated patterns of language in its strategy.  This method was evolved and assimilated to become what is known as the Milton Model.  Cognitive/behavioural is a combination of cognitive/behavioural therapy and hypnosis.  Hypnosis is actually a prequel to most therapies and it can be observed in many.  Observable in this form is primarily the relaxation used in hypnosis.

Hypnotherapy is a very effective form of treatment and by using hypnotherapy I can help you to overcome the problems and issues that you may have.

Hypnotherapy Bournemouth sessions with you take place in my home in Southbourne, Bournemouth.
When you contact me we shall make an appointment for an initial consultation
which could take up to an hour, this consultation is FREE of charge.

I usually request an initial consultation followed by at least 3 weekly hypnotherapy sessions,
however, this depends on the outcome of the consultation which produces the most beneficial course of therapy for you.
The hypnotherapy  bournemouth consultation also gives us both an opportunity to meet and to discuss your needs and for you to ask any questions regarding hypnotherapy or any questions about me and how I practice.

Please note:
The consultation is not a hypnotherapy session, the hypnotherapy sessions usually commence on the subsequent visit.

I shall be using counselling skills within the hypnotherapy consultation as a way of gathering relevant personal information about you
