Self Hypnosis

 

Hypnosis is a trance-like state in which the body and mind are relaxed. This makes the mind more receptive to suggestions and able to connect more easily with the subconscious. This state of mind can be induced, or occur naturally. When a natural occurrence of self hypnosis is experienced, it is often the result of complete absorption by an individual in a book or movie. They neither see nor hear any disturbances around them. The client is usually induced by an experienced counsellor or other therapist who has been certified and licensed to practice as a hypnotherapist.  To begin, a state of relaxation is achieved to calm the mind and block distractions. This allows the subconscious mind to accept suggestions without the criticism that the conscious mind often brings. Guided imagery is another commonly utilized technique for achieving this state of relaxation. The counsellor assists the client in creating a clear mental image of events they wish to occur or things that they would like to achieve in their life. Self hypnosis is an extension of these techniques.

Individuals use similar relaxation techniques as a counsellor. This deep state of relaxation puts their mind and body in a state similar to that in meditation. To achieve this, a person must be in a comfortable position, usually lying down in bed or on a sofa. This should be done in a location where they will not be disturbed for at least an hour. Once relaxation has been achieved, the goals or affirmations they decided upon before the session should be stated several times. Affirmations in self hypnosis are often used to manage stress and control cravings. Success and results vary from one individual to another.

Certified counsellors often use downloadable MP3’s or CD’s to aid their client’s self hypnosis efforts. These recordings help individuals reach a relaxed state and are developed to achieve specific outcomes. The external stimulant helps focus the mind. Relaxation follows quickly.  These programs are often created for an individual’s self-improvement and awareness. There are also programs that aid in the discontinuation of certain behaviours, such as smoking, drinking, using recreational chemicals and over-eating. Phobias and fears can be relieved and the sense wellbeing improved.
